The Solva Track

Solva is a small village in the hills, among the olive groves and carob trees. Rest assured that this walk is well worth the effort, not least for the amazing views over the Baia del Sole.

The trail up to this vilage starts in Piazza Stalla, at the junction between Via Aurelia and Via Milano, with the Coscia tower visible behind on the shoreline. From here, cross the railway line using the underpass and start the climb up the broad steps until you reach the road towards Solva and Santa Croce church. Once you have crossed the road, the unpaved track climbs steeply over steps before levelling out as it passes the walls of gardens and allotments. A final section of cobblestones leads you around a series of hairpin bends into Solva.

When you reach the village you will discover a little square and a church that houses some 14th century frescoes depicting the pains of hell. You may also notice that the village does not feature Ligurian archways between the houses.
It is a fact that just wandering around the village is a charming experience, particularly in summer when the bougainvillea is in flower.

This village is very old and its name is derived from the local dialect word meaning “above”. References to Solva can be found dating back as far as 1326.
