Cappelletta Stella Maris

Cappelletta Stella Maris

La Cappelletta is one of the symbols of the town and a wonderful viewpoint over the beach and out to sea, as well as for catching a glimpse of the Luca Ferrari Marina.

The little chapel is perched on a rock where a watchtower once stood. Only a few traces of the old tower remain, hidden away in the chapel’s basement.

We recommend a visit, even if it is just to relax and take a few photos. Over the years the chapel’s role has changed many times but one thing remains certain: it is a monument in honour of those who have lost their lives at sea.

Legend says that between Gallinara island and Capo Mele there was the “Scoglio delle Vedove”, the notorious "widows' rocks" which claimed many lives. This led the local fishermen to put their faith in the "Star of the Sea", leading to the name La Cappelletta Stella Maris. Today, the dangerous rocks are no longer there and La Cappelletta is considered by many to be a magical and romantic place, especially at night when it is lit up by lights reflected in the sea below.

The Coscia Tower was built in the 16th century to defend our town against invaders coming from the sea. One of only a few such towers still standing, it seems to still be protecting us.
